SETC 2023 Screening Auditions

The SETC conducts one of the country’s largest combined auditions. Approximately 85 companies gather at the Annual Convention to audition over 800 actors. To be eligible to audition as a professional you must be 18 years of age or older, not be currently enrolled in school and have had a minimum of two paid professional jobs in live theatre since completing your training. Dancer Only Auditions also occur at the Spring Convention.

SETC next Annual Convention will be in Mobile, AL, March 13-17, 2024 where live Spring Professional Auditions & Theatre Job Fair will happen. Accessibility options for those who cannot travel will be available.

SETC Guidelines

2023 SETC Screening Auditions will be virtual.

SETC Screening Audition Fee: $40

Deadlines:
Registration Opens:
 September 1st
Registration Closes: November 1st at 11:59pm ET*
Submissions Adjudicated: by November 30th
Candidates Notified of Passed or Not Passed: December 5th
Early Bird Deadline, Convention Registration: January 5th*
Audition Dates:  March 14-16, 2024

  • Early submission is important. We will stop accepting submissions once we reach 2,400.
  • Convention Registration information will be posted on October 1st.

Are the Screening Auditions for me?
These preliminary auditions are for those actors who wish to participate in the Spring Professional Auditions at the annual SETC Convention.  Adults, senior citizens, and certain students* may register for SETC Screening Auditions. Please Note: Only a percentage of those participating in the Screening Auditions will be invited to advance to the Spring Professional Auditions held at the annual SETC Convention.

High School Students:
High School students are generally not eligible to participate in the SETC Professional Screening Auditions.  Applicants must be 18 years of age before the close of screening auditions registration.  If you are not enrolled in any school and meet the age requirement, please see “Professional Actors/Singers” below.  Please contact the SETC Central Office for any questions.

Undergraduate Students:
Undergraduate students, whether or not they have earned a salary acting and/or have passed through SETC Professional Screening Auditions in the past, are required to apply, pay screening fee, and pass screening auditions in order to move forward to SETC Spring Professional Auditions.  If advanced, associated Convention registration fees will apply.  Please contact the SETC Central Office for any questions.

Graduate Students:
Graduate students in MFA Theatre Performance programs may apply to SETC Professional Screening Auditions as a Professional (see “+ Professional Actors/Singers” below), provided they meet all other Professional requirements.  However, new policies require these auditionees to apply, pay screening fee, and pass screening auditions in order to move forward to SETC Spring Professional Auditions.  If advanced, associated Convention registration fees will apply.  Please contact the SETC Central Office for any questions.

Professional Actors/Singers:
Non-Equity professional actors/singers must apply for the SETC Professional Screening Auditions.  New policies require these auditionees to apply, pay screening fee, and pass screening auditions in order to move forward to SETC Spring Professional Auditions.  If advanced, associated Convention registration fees will apply.  In order to qualify:

  • 18 years of age or older prior to screening auditions registration deadline
  • Not enrolled in high school or college/university (except MFA students)
  • Available to accept full-time/year-round or seasonal work

Equity professional actor/singers must apply for the SETC Professional Screening Auditions.  New policies require these auditionees to apply, pay screening fee, and pass screening auditions in order to move forward to SETC Spring Professional Auditions.  If advanced, associated Convention registration fees will apply.  In order to qualify:

  • 18 years of age or older prior to screening auditions registration deadline
  • Not enrolled in high school or college/university (except MFA students)
  • Available to accept full-time/year-round or seasonal work
  • Provide two director references.  These can be directors from college/university, community, or professional theatre.
  • Current member of Actors’ Equity Association (EMC does not qualify)
  • Provide valid AEA membership number and expiration date on the application
  • Present your AEA membership card at Convention for badge pick-up

Professional Dancer Only:

Professional dancer-only performers must apply for the SETC Professional Screening Auditions.  New policies require these auditionees to apply, pay a screening fee, and pass screening auditions in order to move forward to SETC Spring Professional Auditions.  If advanced, associated Convention registration fees will apply.  In order to qualify:

  • 18 years of age or older prior to screening auditions registration deadline
  • Available to accept full-time/year-round or seasonal work
  • Provide two director/choreographer references or have a minimum of four years of formal training.  The references can be directors/choreographers from college/university, community, or professional theatre.
  • Proficient in basic dance routines; high level of technique and ballet expected; tap not required, but highly sought
  • Dance reel required for the application
  • Dance reels should be no more than 3 minutes in length.

Required materials for all auditionees:

  • Contact Information
  • Main Audition Video (60 seconds)
    • Acting only – Monologue
    • Singing only – Song (song must be accompanied with piano music or high quality track)
    • Both Acting & Singing – Monologue and Song (both must be included in your video)
  • Headshot & Resume
  • You may also upload extra media to showcase your range.  
  • Required video file format includes .MOV .AVI .MP4 (most phones use .MP4 format)
  •   Files cannot be larger than 200mb
  •   Files must be labeled: YOUR NAME 2024”. i.e. “Mary Smith 2024”

SETC Screening Audition Recording Session

Do you need a video of your audition for the SETC Spring Professional Audition Screening?  

The Alabama Conference of Arts (ACT) College/University division is hosting a recording session at Auburn University at Montgomery on Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 12 until 4 pm.  Each auditionee will have a 10-minute slot to record their audition.  ACT will provide a stage, pianist, videographer (you bring a USB/thumb drive).  Registrants will be signed up on a first come, first serve basis, so don’t wait.  The deadline to register is Friday, October 20, 2023.
Cost:
You must be an active ACT member.  
Membership is:
$25 Adult/Professional
$15 College/University Student
$10 High School Student
